Custodial Services are provided, not by the School, but via the Department of Building Care. Their responsibilities include:

General:

  • Trash - Collect (daily)
  • Recycling - Collect paper/cardboard (as needed)
  • Paper Shredders - Empty if powerhead is removed (as needed)
  • Relamping - Change bulbs in overhead light fixtures (if fixture can be reached by 8' ladder)
  • Drinking Fountains - Clean and disinfect (daily)
  • Telephones - Clean and disinfect (weekly)
  • Walls/Vertical Surfaces - Spot clean (as needed)
  • Doors and Door Vents - Spot clean (as needed)

Public Areas (Lobbies, Hallways, Elevators, Stairwells, Entryways, Lounges, Public Administrative Offices):

  • Floor Care:
    • Dust mop/carpet sweep (daily)
    • Wet mop/vacuum (weekly and as needed)
  • Dusting (as needed)
  • Entry Glass (as needed)

Classrooms/Auditoriums/Conference Rooms:

  • Floor Care (same as public areas above)
  • Clean blackboards/whiteboards (daily)
  • Restock erasers and chalk (daily)
  • Tabletops/Desktops:
    • Spot clean (daily)
    • Wash (weekly)
  • Dusting (as needed)

Restrooms:

  • Clean, disinfect, and restock (daily)

Libraries/Computer Labs:

  • Floor Care (same as public areas above)
  • Tabletops/Desktops/Carrels (same as classrooms above)
  • Dust stack shelves (as needed)

Please note:  Careful attention is given around computers.

Labs:

  • Floor Care:
    • Dust mop/wet mop/vacuum (weekly or as needed)

Outside Entrances:

  • Sweep walk, shovel snow, empty cigarette containers (as needed)

Private Offices:

  • Floor Care (weekly)

Project Work:

  • Hard floor refinishing
  • Carpet extraction

CUSTODIANS CANNOT:

  • Move or dust personal items on desks, window sills, cabinets, etc.
  • Clean office equipment/computers
  • Clean kitchen areas (clean floors only)
  • Clean vending machines
  • Pick up lab waste/glass/autoclaved material
  • Move furniture (See Set-Up Arrangements for Internal Functions)

 

Custodial Services are available twenty-four (24) hours a day Monday through Friday.

If you have a scheduled event, i.e. Proctor and Gamble Reception, etc., for which you would like to have some extra attention paid to the facility please notify sagemgmt@cornell.edu and include such information as follows:

  • the Room being reserved,
  • the Time and Date and
  • the Contact Person.

Please keep in mind, this service is contingent upon availability of the room, that is, if the Custodian can access the room between classes and the scheduled event.

It should be noted that during inclement weather (e.g. snow removal) or campus emergencies (e.g. floods) custodial work schedules will be adjusted as necessary. Also, during special campus events (e.g. registration, final exams and commencement) Building Care custodians may be reassigned for the day.
